The Hero system was introduced with the launch of Nightfall. This unique system to Guild Wars allows you to control up to 3 NPC Hero players in your party, giving you more control over your style of game play. Now let’s take a look at how to use your Heroes.

Adding a Hero:

Heroes can only be added in a Town or Outpost. To add a Hero look at your Party window and if you have any Heroes at your control you will see the Add Hero option available to you.  Clicking on the Dropdown will list the Heroes you have, simply click on their name and this will add them to your party. Remember that you can only have 3 Heroes under your control at once and that Heroes count towards the total number of people in your party.

Equipping Skills:

Your Heroes are not like normal NPC Henchmen, in that you can chose what skills they take and what weapons they carry, you can even chose what secondary profession they have.

To change the skills of the Heroes in your party open your Skills Window ( K ) and you will see your character and the Heroes in your party across the top of the screen. Clicking on one of your Heroes will bring up their attributes and skills. You can fine tune where the attribute points are spent and also equip any skills that you have unlocked on your account.

Weapons and Upgrades:

Before you head out for adventure you will want to equip your Heroes with the best weapons you have. Open up your Inventory ( I ) and you will see that your Heroes are listed across the top of the screen.  Your Heroes share the same inventory space as you. To equip a weapon to your Hero select the Hero’s picture on the top and simply drag the item to the Hero’s Equipment slot. You can also put Insignias and Weapon Mods on your Hero’s Armour and weapons in the same way you would for your own equipment/armour.

Controlling Your Heroes:

While out in the field you have some degree of control over your Heroes, to control them first you need to open the Hero bars for each of your Heroes. If you look on your Party screen you will see a number beside each Hero, clicking on this number will open the Hero bar for that Hero. Once the Hero Bar is open you can place it where you want by dragging it around the screen. There are 3 modes to each hero and they only apply to that hero.

A: Fight

The Hero will attack a called target, or attack if the party is in combat

B: Guard The Hero will stand guard at the point you placed the flag. If no flag is placed the hero will stay at the back of the group. The hero will attack in Guard but only if this does not involve moving from the Guard area or the back of the group

C: Avoid Combat Hero will never attack and tries to avoid combat if attacked.

While in combat your heroes will activate their own spells, however clicking on a spell in the hero bar will force that hero to cast that spell as soon as he/she has enough energy.

Hero Flags:

While you have your Heroes in your group you will see the Hero flags under your radar . These flags can be used to force your Heroes to go to set points.  There are 2 types of flag, the first one  controls all your Heroes in your party. The others control the movement of each of your Heroes individually. To set these Flags just click the flag and then place it either by clicking on a place on the radar or clicking a location on the ground. When these flags are set your Hero(s) will go to these points and stay there until the flags are cleared. To clear the flags once set click on the red clross beside the flag markers on your radar.
